In the concert series Masterpieces, renowned music presenter and radio and TV host Mathias Hammer showcases some of the greatest melodies in classical music. In this festive concert, he presents a selection of works that hold a special connection to Tivoli’s rich history.
Music has always been an integral part of the Gardens, dating back to when the old concert hall was a restaurant with live outdoor performances – where the volume could be adjusted simply by opening or closing the windows. Today, music in all genres remains essential to Tivoli’s identity, with more than 100 concerts held annually.
Mathias Hammer has delved deep into the archives to uncover beautiful works and captivating stories that bring the Gardens’ vibrant musical heritage to life. At the heart of this musical exploration stands H.C. Lumbye, Tivoli’s first orchestra conductor. It’s almost impossible to think of the atmosphere in the historic Gardens without humming one of Lumbye’s iconic hits, making him the undeniable highlight of this evening’s programme.
Lumbye was also a passionate advocate for nurturing younger generations, a legacy that greatly benefited Denmark’s second national composer, Carl Nielsen. It was in Tivoli Gardens that Nielsen premiered his very first opus, Suite for Strings, making it an essential part of this evening’s programme. From there, the concert builds to the splendour of Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks and Johann Strauss II’s iconic waltz, Emperor Waltz.
The evening also features the celebrated movement from Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto—a melody cherished by audiences of all ages—alongside Shostakovich’s evocative film music and Stravinsky’s monumental score for the ballet The Firebird. Stravinsky, a confident cosmopolitan, holds a special place in Tivoli’s history as the first-ever recipient of the Léonie Sonning Music Prize, awarded here in the Gardens.
Let Mathias Hammer – an electrifying presence and a fountain of knowledge on Danish classical music – guide you on a vibrant and unforgettable journey through Tivoli’s rich musical legacy.
